Well, breaking overnight, Russia has launched a deadly barrage of strikes across Ukraine, killing at least eight people, including three children. NATO member Poland was forced to scramble fighter jets to defend its airspace during the attacks.
Poland's interior minister says authorities found a crater in a field near the country's border with Ukraine caused by an unidentified object after reports of an explosion.
And for more on this, we're joined by CBS News International reporter Aiden Stretch, who's following developments from our London bureau.
Aiden, good morning. Now, what more can you tell us about these latest strikes?
>> Good morning, Michael. In those attacks overnight, Russia launched more than 280 drones, more than 70 missiles.
That's according to Ukraine's President Vladimir Zilinski, who said that the attack was quite widespread geographically.
Russia targeted cities not only in Ukraine's east, including Nepro and Creiri, but also the capital in Kev and Lviv in western Ukraine, which is just about 50 miles from the Polish border.
In addition to those eight people who you mentioned, were were killed. There were at least 26 wounded in Lviv alone.
Emergency workers, as you can see, have been there throughout the day working through the rubble attempting to rescue survivors, including some children. Uh, and I just want to share two pieces of reporting about this incident in Poland that you just mentioned that have just come in.
Now, one is from a Ukrainian official who says that while they're still while Polish authorities may still be investigating the origins of the missile and what exactly it was, he does say that Ukraine's military has confirmed that it was a KH 101 Russian cruise missile that left that crater.
Uh the other piece of reporting that I want to share is from a Ukraine-based military analyst who looks at the trajectory of these projectiles.
Um and this cruise missile uh that landed in Poland. He said that if he's looking at the way the missile was shot, it's unlikely that this just overshot Lviv and was a mistake that ended up in Poland.
He's not able to definitively say that the Polish border was the target, but they were certainly aiming for something either in northern Ukraine, very close to the border or within Polish territory itself.
>> All right, Aiden Stretch, thank you.
