In the Bronx, one festival transforms school grounds into an after school escape for kids to play, compete, and spend the afternoon outdoors.

>> It's awesome.
>> And judging by the lines at the attractions, plenty of the other kids seem to agree.
Families spend the afternoon moving from one activity to the next.
Many kids hitting the bounce houses first, running in and jumping around.
>> Very important for the kids, um, for the neighborhood, and just to bring some excitement for the children.
>> At another stop, it's all about custom pins, with kids picking designs and walking away with small keepsakes.
Others zoom around on tricycles, or at least try to, turning the schoolyard into a small racetrack.
Some of the older kids attempting to take on the little guys for ball games.
And at the face painting tables, lots of concentration, and of course, dragons.
>> And this is something that I like to see as opposed to them being stuck watching, um, those games on the internet and on on their tablets.
>> Volunteers and organizers keep everything running, and even getting in on the fun, turning this schoolyard into a sweet escape.
>> I'm happy that we're able to put on something that they'll remember.
At least for not the rest of their lives, at least the rest of the week.
>> Partnering with New York City Parks, Council Member Amanda Farias is hosting this event for the fifth time.
>> These events for me are the way that I get to give back and ensure that families have outings they can do, activities they can do with their kids that is of no cost to them and really no thought process.
It's local, it's happening in their backyard.
