So Liz, this just happened. Uh I mean, what do you make of this? Is it shocking that a Republican made the number two spot or is this uh what was trending all along?
>> Yeah, well I think for the past weekwe've seen Steve Hilton holding prettystrong in his second spot. Tommy Styerwas making gains, but for the pastseveral days, uh it's been seeminglikely that Steve Hilton was going toface Javier Bera. It is notable thatTommy Styer, who was in third place,spent 200 more than $200 million of hisown money. Just a record amount of moneyfunding his campaign. Ultimately wasn'tenough to get him into that second spot.
Uh at the end of the day though, ifyou've been following this race, youknow that uh there has just been so manycandidates in the race that it split theDemocratic vote. A lot of Democrats werehoping that two candidates wouldprogress uh to the runoff, but I thinkjust seeing how many, you know,candidates there were splitting thevote, not not surprising now that SteveHilton is moving on.
>> Yeah. And it feels like every secondthat goes by, another mile of conspiracyforms here. Um does it seem like thedistrust that we're starting to see herein California is causing concern amonglocal and statewide leaders? I thinkwhat we're seeing from Democraticlawmakers in this state and Democrats ingeneral right now is a concern that thisis setting the stage for what's to comein November. California is going to havesome very hotly contested House racesand we are already seeing uh someRepublicans starting with the presidentsewing doubt into how elections are runhere. Uh there has been discussion,bipartisan discussion though over thepast several days about potentiallytrying to figure out ways to speed up the process. Uh because even if thereisn't fraud, people are saying, "Okay,it's 2026. Does it need to take thislong? It has opened the door to theperception of fraud." Here is what umRepublican political strategist RobStzman told me. He is someone who workedfor Schwarzenegger. He helpedSchwarzenegger get elected in the recallreturn election uh several years ago. Knows thestate very well. Take a listen.
So, California could go a lot way a longway towards squaltching the conspiraciesif they had a much more efficientsystem, but at the end of the day,there's no evidence of of fraud or fraudof any magnitude that's actually goingto swing the election. And if Karen Basswas rigging this election, she'd letSpencer Pratt finish second. She'd muchrather face him than Ramen in November.
Yeah, that's where the conspiracy goesand kind of hits somewhat of a dead end.Right.
>> Right. Because you we have these pollsfrom uh the Berkeley Institute ofGovernmental Studies that came outactually showing that if Karen Bass wasgoing up against Spencer Pratt, shewould win in a landslide. Here you cansee uh she'd win in a landslide by like18 points. But now going up againstNithia Ramen, this uh shows that she'sgoing to have a much harder fight. Infact, this shows Nithia Ramen uh pullingahead in that that poll that washappened before we got these results.But it just shows you that people one ofthe ways that Democrats are pushing backon these claims is saying, "Come on, ifit was rigged, she would have wanted toface Spencer Pratt." And we say that, ofcourse, because LA is such a heavilyblue city. Democrats outnumberRepublicans.
>> And again, we've been doing uh quite a bit of math and there's no one thatknows math like the NBC decision desk.
Uh and yet the count is not technicallyover, right? Have we heard from SpencerPratt?
>> Spencer Pratt has been uh notably quiet. Uh last night is when NBC News projectedthat he would not be advancing. And I believe the only thing he has posted since just happened um a little bit agoand it's a picture of a duck uh sittingon calm water. So we can make of thatwhat we will. We will say earlier in theday yesterday, he did put out a tweeturging his supporters to, you know, youknow, sort of patience, saying there'sstill a lot of votes to be counted, butwe haven't heard from him yet. He didsay at some point uh in this campaignthat if he didn't win, he was going toleave LA. So, I know some people arewondering to see what he does next, butwe'll see.
