a former NBA star is set to become the first defendant to plead guilty in a sweeping federal gambling investigation that involved the mafia and a tip about an injured LeBron James. 
Prosecutors said Damon Jones knew in advance James would miss a 2023 game against the Bucks and alerted gamblers to bet against the Lakers. 
Writing in a text message, "Get a big bet on Milwaukee tonight before the information is out." 
Jones and James were teammates in Cleveland and he became LeBron's shooting coach. 
Court records also say Jones will plead guilty in a separate case involving poker games rigged by the mob. 
Prosecutors said Jones and NBA Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups were paid to use their notoriety to lure wealthy victims into playing the games. 
And those games were fixed with secretly marked cards, a rigged shuffling machine, even an x-ray table capable of reading cards upside down. 
Billups has pleaded not guilty. 
He and Jones are among nearly three dozen defendants accused of cheating victims out of more than $7 million. 
When these charges were brought at the start of the season, David, they roiled the league. 
Now, Damon Jones is set to plead guilty at the end of the month, right in the middle of the NBA playoffs.
