Mount Vernon library introduces free bike borrowing for cardholders 6%

The Mount Vernon Public Library has launched Westchester County's first free bike borrowing program at a public library, giving library cardholders access to bicycles at no cost.
The library on July 29 held a ceremony to introduce the program and officially rent out the first bike.
There were four bicycles available to borrow at the kickoff.
Anyone with a Mount Vernon Public Library card can check out a bike after signing a liability waiver, library officials said, adding there is currently no set borrowing time limit.
"Today marks much more than a new layer of service.
Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for our community," Library Director Timur Davis said during the ceremony.
Davis explained that the program allows residents to borrow bicycles just as they would books, movies and other library materials.
The initiative aims to promote healthier choices and expand transportation options for Mount Vernon residents.
"Libraries have always been places of opportunity: they connect people to knowledge, technology and lifelong learning," he said.
"Today we [show] that mission by connecting our community to recreation, healthier lifestyles, standard of transportation and greater access to the city of Mount Vernon.
The program is supported by Danny's Cycles in Pelham, which accepts donated bicycles, repairs them and provides ongoing maintenance for the library's program.
"We're [going to] help facilitate donations that they can use for the program that will refurbish as they expand the offerings," said Manuel Garcia, marketing and e-commerce manager at Danny's Cycles.
Garcia said the shop encourages people to donate bicycles regardless of their condition.
Bikes that can be repaired are refurbished for future use, while those beyond repair are responsibly disposed of.
"We think it's great to get people on bikes," he said.
"We just want people riding, whether that's a bike from us or a free bike from their library."
The program was made possible through partnerships with the Inner-City Fund and the New York State Department of Transportation.
According to New York State Department of Transportation spokesperson Eva Hsu, the department has helped establish 10 bike borrowing programs across New York, with Mount Vernon's becoming the first in Westchester County.
"We're just really happy to try and look for different creative, unique ways to bring sustainable transportation opportunities to people in the community," Hsu said.
Eighteen-year-old Elizabeth Hall became the first person to officially borrow a bicycle through the new program during the launch event.
Hall said she typically relies on public transportation, which can sometimes be unreliable, making the library's new service a welcome alternative.
"Sometimes you just want to have the ability to go on your own time," she said.
Hall emphasized that having access to a bicycle will allow her to travel on her own schedule and could help her avoid being late to work when buses or trains are delayed.
