A law firm that already secured a multi-million-dollar settlement for the family of a beloved educator killed by a Metro bus driver is now investigating another crash involving a Metro bus, which this time caused the death of a Cincinnati maintenance worker.
Cooper Elliott is representing the mother of Jonathan Young's two children, the law firm said in a statement.
Young, a city employee, was killed on July 16 when a bus crashed into the truck carrying three city workers on the Norwood Lateral.
Kyle Taylor, 33, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter on July 23, according to a Hamilton County Sheriff's Office release.
"Less than a year after SORTA promised this community it would fix how it hires and trains its drivers, another family is grieving because of a Metro bus," Jeffrey Kenney, a partner at the firm, said in the statement.
"We already held SORTA accountable once.
We are investigating this crash, including Mr.
Taylor's driving and hiring history, and if SORTA failed to keep its word, we will hold them accountable again."
Young, 46, died at the hospital as a result of the crash.
He was hired in 2002 and worked as a supervising traffic worker within the Department of Public Services.
The law firm secured a $10 million settlement last year with the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority as part of a lawsuit filed by the family of Beverly Kinney, a retired schoolteacher killed by a Metro bus in early 2024.
As a result of that settlement, the firm said, SORTA committed to overhaul its driver hiring, training and safety practices.
Taylor is first set to appear in court on July 24.
He was previously cited for traffic violations, including running a red light and speeding, among other infractions, according to Hamilton County court records.
"We are aware of the charges brought against Mr.
Kyle Taylor," Metro said in a statement.
"Mr.
Taylor has been placed on administrative leave, which is our standard practice while the matter is under investigation."
"Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Mr.
Young," the statement reads.
Metro declined to provide any further comment at this time.
