President Donald Trump abruptly paused “Project Freedom,” the short-lived U.S. military-backed operation aimed at escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision came after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman suspended access to key Saudi bases and airspace needed for the mission, according to two U.S. officials.
The operation had been announced by Trump on social media Sunday as a way to counter Iran’s blockade of the strategic waterway.
Saudi leaders were angered by the move, saying they had not been adequately consulted beforehand, the officials told NBC News.
In response, Saudi Arabia informed the United States it would no longer allow U.S. military aircraft to fly from Prince Sultan Airbase or transit Saudi airspace for the operation.
A phone call between Trump and Mohammed bin Salman failed to resolve the dispute.
This forced the president to suspend the effort to restore access to critical regional airspace, officials said.
A Saudi source told NBC News that Trump and the crown prince “have been in touch regularly.”
Saudi officials also spoke with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and U.S.
Central Command officials.
Asked whether the Saudis were caught off guard, the source said events were unfolding rapidly in real time.
The source added that Saudi Arabia supported diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan to broker an agreement between Iran and the United States.
A White House official disputed claims that allies had been blindsided, saying regional partners were notified in advance.

A Middle Eastern diplomat said Oman was also not consulted until after Trump publicly announced the operation.
“The U.S. made an announcement and then coordinated with us,” the diplomat said.
The U.S. military had been preparing additional ships for transit through the strait before the operation was halted.
Central Command earlier said two U.S.-flagged ships had successfully passed through under Project Freedom.
Trump announced Wednesday that the operation would be “paused for a short period of time” while negotiations continued.
