A shooting at a Cypress Kroger store injured two people on Wednesday afternoon as shoppers reported hearing loud booms before they fled to the parking lot.
Around 2:50 p.m., Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman's deputies responded to reports of multiple shots being fired at the grocery store at 20355 Cypresswood Drive near Fairfield Meadows Drive.
Capt.
Juan Flores with Harris County Precinct 4 said deputies arrived at the scene to find one man walking out of the store with a gunshot wound and another person with injuries inside.
Witnesses told deputies they saw a man fire a weapon inside the store.
Both people were in critical condition, and a helicopter was called to transport one to a hospital, according to the constable's office.
A social media post from Herman's office said the shooting may have stemmed from a "domestic disturbance" between the two injured people, based on a preliminary investigation.
Family violence investigators are currently looking into the incident, and charges will be filed after the investigation concludes.
The person who fired shots first — who deputies detained — was shot in the neck and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The other had multiple gunshot wounds and required transport by Life Flight.
"Right now, it appears we don't have any bystanders injured," Flores said.
Some deputy constables began leaving the scene just after 4:30 p.m., although a large central area of the parking lot remained surrounded by crime scene tape.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene in the moments after the shooting.
Patrick Young was in the frozen food aisle when he heard multiple screams and the popping sounds of gunfire.
Within seconds, he said the store turned into "mayhem" as customers began running for the exit.
"I haven't run that fast in so long," Young said.
"It sounded like fear."
April Johnson was outside in the parking lot, loading her groceries into the car when she heard what sounded like firecrackers.
The Cypress-area Kroger is her local grocery store that she shops at two to three times a week.
"It sounded like firecrackers at first, and being that it’s like, the Fourth of July just passed, we didn’t really pay attention until the screaming started and people were leaving out of the store," Johnson said.
"You come to the grocery store for one thing, you don't think you're going to see something like this."
Katie Porter and Lynn Blair heard the sirens of first responder vehicles from the second story of a commercial building near the Kroger as people started running out of the store.
They said the shooting was unexpected and and they had never witnessed something like this in the area.
"(I feel) kind of like I wanted to throw up," Blair said.
"I'm in there every morning.
I go pick up bananas before I even come into work."
A teenager, who declined to give his full name, said he saw a man in a yellow shirt walk into the store and then heard multiple large booms from inside.
The store has been closed as the investigation continues.
"We are cooperating with local law enforcement, who have secured the store and parking lot," Kroger said in a Wednesday statement.
"The store will remain closed while the police investigation continues, and we have initiated counseling services for our associates."
Law enforcement is urging the public to avoid the area as first responders conduct an investigation that is still in its early stages.
This is a developing story.
