An 18-year-old Harlem man was arrested early Monday in connection with a chaotic Friday night shooting near West 125th Street and Amsterdam Avenue that left two people hospitalized and prompted a police officer to open fire, the NYPD said. 
Yandel Ortiz faces charges of attempted murder, assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, police said. 
He was taken into custody early Monday near where the shooting took place, according to the NYPD. 
Ortiz is accused of opening fire on 32-year-old Randy Negron, who police said had just shot a 22-year-old man sitting outside a convenience store. 
Ortiz had pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial on multiple counts of robbery and assault from an October case that involved a weapon, according to court records. 
Police said the violence began around 6:20 p.m. 
Friday, when Negron allegedly approached the 22-year-old man and shot him several times at close range. 
Two plainclothes officers on a meal break witnessed the shooting and gave chase, officials said. 
As Negron rounded the corner onto Amsterdam Avenue, Ortiz entered the intersection and allegedly opened fire at him before fleeing, police said. 
One of the officers also discharged a weapon, authorities said. 
Negron was struck once and taken into custody at the scene. 
Police said it remains unclear whether he was hit by Ortiz or by the officer's gunfire. 
A gun was recovered at the scene, according to the NYPD. 
Negron and the 22-year-old victim were taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, police said. 
The victim was in serious but stable condition, officials said. 
Negron remains hospitalized, according to authorities. 
He faces charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police. 
Attorney information for Ortiz and Negron was not immediately available.
