On a Florida cattle ranch, this critically endangered bird gets a shot at survival 8%

DELUCA PRESERVE — The researchers stand motionless, their eyes trained on a wooden white box nestled in the prairie wiregrass.Inside are three brown birds.
They each weigh less than a few paper clips, but the weight they carry is immeasurable: If these birds can thrive into adulthood, they’d grow the population of one of the nation’s rarest birds, which stands at about 200.
Nobody speaks.
The prairie is quiet but for a faint buzzing of grasshoppers and the steady hum of wind through saw palmettos.All eyes are fixed on Mary Marine, who now crouches behind the bird box.It’s 30 minutes before noon, but the research assistant has already lived a full day.
She woke before dawn for a 150-mile journey to collect the birds from Brevard Zoo.
Since their birth there less than two months ago, the three birds have been raised in preparation for this big day.
In what may be a first in the history of North American conservation, a critically imperiled bird subspecies was set to be released on a working cattle ranch in the rural heart of Florida — one of the last remaining swaths of natural dry prairieland in a rapidly developing state.Marine takes a deep breath.She slides open the first of three doors.Within seconds, a brownish blur streaks from the enclosure.
The quick fluttering of wings breaks the prairie’s stillness, proof that the first Florida grasshopper sparrow has darted into the wild.The bird flies a few dozen feet, then disappears into the grasslands’ embrace.Marine opens the hatches for the two remaining birds.Thirty seconds pass.Then a minute.Then two.Finally, the second bird hops from the box.
Wrapped around its legs are blue and red bands, a marker that researchers will use to identify and study the sparrows’ introduction into the wilderness.The bird looks around at its new and wild home, wide-eyed and curious.
No taller than a golf tee, it extends a neck dotted with a burst of brown and tan feathers.Legs bend.
Wings flap.
It lurches from the box and flies into the prairie.Alone now, sparrow three needs a bit of loving encouragement.Six minutes have passed since Marine opened the gate, but it hasn’t budged.
She coaxes the bird out of the enclosure with a few gentle taps on the back of the box.It stands there, beak agape, as if awed by the great, big world ahead.
It blinks its eyes, tilts its head.With a few more taps on the box in fast succession, the Florida grasshopper sparrow takes flight.“
No aspect of this will ever get old.
I just love these birds,” Marine says just after the successful release.
“To see them succeed is like ...”
She pauses, finding the right words.“
It’s just everything.”
The birds were the 11th, 12th and 13th grasshopper sparrows to be released at DeLuca Preserve in Okeechobee this summer.
In June, the team of researchers at the nonprofit Archbold Biological Station released 10 others.
They’ve already spotted six of the birds thriving in the wild.It’s the first time the rare birds have been introduced to the roughly 27,000-acre preserve owned by the University of Florida Foundation.
About two-thirds of the property’s acreage is used for cattle.
Cows roam, keeping tall grass at bay in a shrubby habitat that’s key for the continued survival of the sparrows.DeLuca Preserve is proof that Florida’s rangelands are a critical puzzle piece in connecting the state’s remaining wildlife habitat: It’s one of five protected sparrow breeding grounds, and it provides a wildlife corridor that links nearby Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park and the state-run Three Lakes wildlife area.“
Each bird out here is so significant, and so having three more is amazing,” says Marine, the lead scientist on the DeLuca Florida grasshopper sparrow project, as she plods through the prairie on the way back to her research truck.
“It’s three small birds, but it’s this huge cascading effect that they have the potential to do,” she says.“
So, it’s pretty amazing.”
Back from the brinkYou usually hear a Florida grasshopper sparrow before you see one.The often-hidden bird, one of 12 grasshopper sparrow subspecies, gets its name from the pitchy buzz resembling its namesake insect.
Males will sing from perches on palmetto fronds or grassy stalks during breeding season, which runs from March through August.The sparrows don’t migrate.
They stay put in open, treeless areas with low shrubs and bunch grasses — stationary habits that make them especially vulnerable to Florida’s shifting landscape.The decline of more than 90% of dry prairie in South-Central Florida, largely from humans developing and converting land to agriculture, plummeted the population from over 500 known singing males in the 1990s to just 50 three decades later.Most of the sparrows’ decline occurred as dry prairie became pasture and sod farms, according to the Florida Natural Areas Inventory.
The loss fragmented flocks and isolated the remaining groups into shrunken habitats.
When that happens, the genetic health of the species declines with fewer birds to mix and breed.“
They’re on a toboggan run to oblivion,” reads a 2013 Audubon article .
“And unless managers can figure out and reverse what’s wrong in the next year or two, this bird will almost surely be gone.”

This graphic was featured in The Little Brown Bird , a documentary about grasshopper sparrow conservation efforts.Today, there’s hope for the sparrows.Now hovering at pre-population crash levels, they have retreated from the edge of extinction thanks in large part to collaborative conservation breeding efforts that began about a decade ago between governments, nonprofits and research groups.In 2020, the first wild sparrows arrived at Brevard Zoo, and the first breeding season began two years later.
Kelly Currier, a conservation zoologist there who lovingly refers to the sparrows as “the kids” or “the nuggets,” helps feed and raise them before their eventual release.During her time at the zoo since the breeding program began, Currier has helped raise 256 sparrow hatchlings, of which more than 70% have been released, she said.
Among the sparrows that aren’t released, some with important genetics are kept at the zoo to breed, and others have died.“
I want people to know that even the smallest of species can make a huge difference in our everyday lives,” she said.
“I feel excited and honored to get to even know these birds and help them.”
The resilience of the sparrows continues to awe Currier, who just this week was netting grasshoppers and other bugs at DeLuca Preserve to bring back and feed the young birds at the zoo more than 70 miles away.Just consider the origin story of the three birds that were released, she said:In June last year, Marine’s team found new DeLuca hatchlings doused in fire ants.They rushed the birds to Brevard Zoo, where the conservation team introduced them to foster sparrows.One female hatchling thrived.
She had risen from the fire ants, so they named her Phoenix.A year later, on June 3, Phoenix hatched eggs at the zoo and began raising kids of her own.
Fully independent from their mom after three weeks, veterinarians gave the young sparrows a green light on their health exam and cleared them for release.On July 15, Marine brought Phoenix’s three children to their new home at DeLuca Preserve, flying for the first time into the same prairie where their mother was born.“
We were so happy to have that come full circle this year,” Currier said.Hope in a nestDespite a rebounding population, the success of the Florida grasshopper sparrow remains fragile — with so few birds in the wild, the emotions of every birth and loss are magnified.After watching the sparrow release July 15, the Tampa Bay Times joined the Archbold research team as they checked on several nests hidden around DeLuca Preserve.
Grasshopper sparrows lay their nests on the ground, concealed and usually at the base of a grass clump.
Their preference for laying eggs low in the shrubs heightens the risk of predators, flooding and unwitting humans.
Only about one in 10 nests succeeds, experts estimate.
At DeLuca, that number is closer to three nests.
Marine moved through the prairie with precision.
She reminded everyone to walk carefully through the grass where baby sparrows and other ground-nesting birds may be hiding: Only take a step when you know for certain there isn’t a bird beneath your boot, she advised .
Each trek to a nest underscored the inevitable lows, highs and uncertainties that come when you work with one of the most endangered birds on the planet.One nest, which just days ago housed an egg, had failed.
What happened — whether it was a snake or something else — wasn’t immediately clear.Another nest was uncomfortably close to floodwaters.
The preserve had just received a few inches of rain earlier in the week, and the team was riddled with nerves as they hiked through squishy, damp soil toward the nest.The eggs were thankfully dry and unharmed.“
That’s a huge relief,” Marine says.
“My heart was dropping there for a second.”
With a nearby pool of water too close for comfort, and light rain in the forecast, Marine vowed to return to check on them the next day.The final nest of the day, though, a small cavern hidden in plain sight beneath dense wiregrass, brought smiles to the research team.They found hope in the form of four creamy white eggs with red-brown flecks, now a week old and close to hatching.
Mom chirped from a grass perch nearby, further confirmation the nest was succeeding.“
This one is all good,” Marine says, relieved.If all goes well, the eggs will hatch any day.Babies will then stay in the nest for eight days longer.And if they survive floods, fire ants and the encroaching march of humans and thrive into adulthood, they may be the birds that help propel their population one step closer to a full recovery.“
We’ve more than doubled the population recently.
Two hundred birds is a number worth celebrating, and it is a number that should still scare us,” Marine said.“
Both of those things can be true at the same time.”...
