CMS board expects to conclude Crystal Hill review before school starts 4%

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education expects to complete its independent review of Superintendent Crystal Hill within the next few weeks, according to a statement released late Wednesday by Board Chair Stephanie Sneed.
Hill was placed on temporary leave with pay in June while the board initiated the review.
The board said at the time that the investigation would center on Hill's "administrative and operational oversight.”
In her statement on Wednesday, issued after the board ended a special session, Sneed said the board anticipated providing an update before students return to school on Aug.

She cited North Carolina law regarding personnel matters as the reason for limited public details during the ongoing process.
"Because this is a personnel matter governed by North Carolina law, there are limits on what information the Board can share while the review is ongoing," Sneed said.
"We appreciate the community’s patience as we complete this process in a manner that is thorough, fair, and consistent with our legal and oversight obligations."
Meanwhile, The Charlotte Observer has reported that the investigation centers on CMS contracts, worth more than $1.7 million, that were awarded over three years to some of Hill’s former colleagues.
In her only public statement since the investigation began, Hill said the board had not given her any information about the investigation or the reason for her temporary leave.
"I am not raising that as a complaint; I trust the Board will share those details, but I want our community to have an accurate picture of what I do and do not yet know," Hill said in the written statement on June 17 .
The public portion of Wednesday’s meeting lasted less than five minutes and saw members approve several contracts under the consent agenda .
Among them: $15 million for student transportation services, $2.1 million for Mecklenburg County waste and recycling services and $700,800 for off-site data center services.
The agenda also included a new pay scale for CMS employees, which adds pay raises approved in the latest state budget and a 5% local increase for teachers.
After approving the consent agenda, the board went into closed session and did not return.
In her later statement, which was emailed to QCity Metro, Sneed said the district continues to prepare for the new school year.
"Preparing for a successful school year has not stopped," the statement read.
"Our work continues every day, and we remain committed to supporting our students, our educators, and our school communities while this process moves toward completion."
