A federal grand jury Wednesday indicted three Las Vegas tax preparers on charges of conspiring to defraud the United States and willfully preparing false income tax returns for clients, the Justice Department announced.
The indictment alleges that Jadee Glover, who owned and operated CashBack Tax Service in Las Vegas, and two employees  Julia Brainerd and Shamoya Perkins  conspired to file fraudulent returns that in some cases fabricated entire businesses and in others inflated receipts and expenses for businesses clients actually owned.
The indictment alleges the three also included false tax credits on returns by falsely claiming clients had missed substantial amounts of work because they had contracted COVID-19 or were caring for someone who had.
Those fabricated claims generated large refunds the clients were not entitled to receive, a portion of which was directed back to CashBack Tax Service as tax preparation fees, according to the indictment.
Brainerd also allegedly prepared false returns through Royalty Tax Services, a separate Las Vegas tax preparation business she owned and operated.
Perkins allegedly did the same through Jewels Tax Services, another Las Vegas firm she separately owned and operated.
If convicted, all three face a maximum of five years in prison on the conspiracy charge and three years in prison for each count of willfully aiding and assisting in the preparation of false returns.
They also face potential supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties.
Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald of the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division and First Assistant U.S.
Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada announced the indictment.
IRS Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation, and trial attorneys Regina Jeon and Megan E.
Wessel of the Criminal Division’s Tax Section are prosecuting the case.
The case is a part of the Department of Justice’s National Fraud Enforcement Division, part of President Donald Trump’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, specifically targeting fraud, waste and abuse within federal benefit programs.
The federal agency is chaired by Vice President J.D.
Vance.
If convicted, the three could face a maximum of five years in prison for conspiracy and three years for each count of false tax preparation, along with a period of supervicsed release, restitution and monetary penalties, the release stated.
A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S.
Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
