Nashville saw a new side of dance-pop icon Charli XCX on July 29.
In support of her new rock-leaning album Music, Fashion, Film, the British pop star played an intimate, at-capacity show — presented by Spotify with free first-come, first-served tickets — at The Basement East, which holds 575 people.
There was a stark difference from her last appearance in Nashville, a sold-out 2024 appearance at Bridgestone Arena on a co-headlining tour with Troye Sivan following her hit album Brat.
Wednesday afternoon, Charli XCX stopped in at Grimey’s for a Q&A with Belcourt staffer and sometime Scene contributor Quinn Hills.
Later that evening, fans who braved the long line bopped along amid the strobe lights to the star’s newest songs.
Released the previous Friday, the album is full of heavy guitar and drums, but doesn’t stray far from Charli XCX’s electronic dance roots.
The night opened with “Playboy Bunny,” a song that’s not on streaming services as of this writing; it appears as the B-side on the physical 7-inch of the MFF song “SS26.”
Next came “Yeah,” also from her new record.
The new material is a fresh and fun musical return for Charli XCX that doesn’t try to warm over Brat's global success.
But Brat superfans need not fear: She has not fully left the chart-topping album in the past, and performed “Apple” early in her set.
She strayed into her 2020 album How I’m Feeling Now with songs like “Party 4 U” and “Pink Diamond.”
Then she shifted into another inward-looking song from the record sessions, “If You Take Away the Music Then What Has She Got?”
which is also a vinyl exclusive.
That’s the magic of Charli XCX.
She has become a master at blending extremely personal, vulnerable lyrics with melodic, sometimes chaotic hyperpop production.
She’s done it all across her discography, which is full of songs that (speaking from personal experience) might give you a knot in your stomach, along with others you’ll want to dance to at the club.
The crowd experienced just that Wednesday with heavy new songs like “Card Declined” and “Camera,” juxtaposed with the lighter “2007” and “Wink Wink.”
The penultimate song of the night was “No One Lasts Forever,” minus the haunting outro from David Cronenberg.
Sealing the deal on signaling her new era, the pop queen closed with Music, Fashion, Film’s opener “Rock Music,” a blast of raw energy that explores how music can help you get through the roughest times.
