Expanding F-35 support 
The F135 powers every variant of the F-35 Lightning II, making it one of the most widely deployed military jet engines in service today. 
Demand for sustainment has grown alongside the aircraft’s expanding global footprint, with more partner nations adding the stealth fighter to their fleets. 
Pratt & Whitney said the contract supports customers in the United States and overseas through an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity arrangement. 
That structure allows the government to place orders as operational needs evolve throughout the contract period. 
Chris Johnson, vice president of Pratt & Whitney’s F135 program, said maintaining engine availability remains essential for the fighter’s operational success. 
He added that the award will reinforce the company’s worldwide sustainment network and help operators continue relying on the engine’s performance. 
Global maintenance network 
Keeping thousands of engine components available requires an extensive logistics system. 
Pratt & Whitney’s F135 sustainment network now supports 42 operating bases and 13 naval vessels worldwide through multiple maintenance depots and technical support facilities. 
Those locations handle inspections, repairs, spare parts distribution, and maintenance planning for aircraft deployed across different regions. 
The network allows operators to access replacement parts and technical expertise without relying on a single support hub. 
Pratt & Whitney has delivered more than 1,500 production F135 engines since the program began. 
The engine now serves military customers across 20 allied nations, reflecting the F-35 program’s continued international expansion. 
Engine upgrade ahead 
Attention is also shifting toward the F135 Engine Core Upgrade, which will modernize the propulsion system for future F-35 operations. 
Pratt & Whitney said the upgrade will use the existing sustainment infrastructure, allowing operators to integrate the improved engine without creating an entirely new support network. 
The company expects the modernization effort to improve fleet readiness while reducing long-term sustainment complexity. 
Reusing established maintenance facilities and logistics systems could also lower operating costs for participating nations over the coming decades. 
For the Pentagon and its international partners, the new spare parts contract addresses a more immediate priority.
