Microsoft intervenes after LG gets caught installing McAfee adware onto Windows 11 PCs via their monitors 84%

A few days ago, LG was discovered to be automatically installing adware via their monitors when connected to a Windows PC, resulting in popups for apps like McAfee appearing on screen that users are forced to dismiss.
Naturally, this has caused outrage online, and appears to have even caught the attention of Microsoft.
Now, Microsoft has confirmed that it has intervened and reached out to LG to see what can be done about stopping this.
Windows chief Pavan Davuluri says that LG has agreed to stop McAfee from appearing within their LG monitor popups.
"We’ve connected with the team at LG and as an immediate next step, they have agreed to disable the McAfee pop-up from their app," Davuluri said in a post on X .
"We appreciate LG working with us toward a shared goal of a better experience for our mutual customers."
It's good to see Microsoft stepping up to help here, as OEMs often get away with gross practices on their hardware.
Many Windows PCs ship with adware and bloatware out of the box, and Microsoft has done little in the past to reduce this.
With the company reaching out to LG directly, it's clear that Microsoft thought LG's practices here were a step too far, and is eager to improve the overall health of the Windows ecosystem by ensuring OEMs are dialing back on the amount of bloatware and adware that appears on third-party hardware.

McAfee is one of the most pre-installed OEM bloatware apps you can find.
Almost all major Windows OEM hardware will include a free-trial of McAfee, along with other demo or trial apps like Dropbox, Microsoft Office, and more.
Unlike actual PC hardware, LG's adware is being installed through a monitor app that is automatically downloaded onto a Windows PC when you connect an LG monitor to it.
The app is designed to allow you to control functions and settings of the monitor, but it includes a popup that previously displayed ads for things like McAfee.
It's unclear if LG is planning to stop showing ads there permanently, if it it's only doing so temporarily until the outrage dies down.
Hopefully, this change is a permanent one, as most users are not interested in being advertised to via a popup appearing because of the monitor they've chosen to use.
