The Economist editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes confronted Elon Musk on his prediction that Britain is heading toward “civil war,” trashing the claim as “nonsense” while the tech billionaire doubled down.
The tense exchange came during a 90-minute interview released Thursday, in which the SpaceX founder defended his views on immigration, rejecting accusations that he backs “far-right” or “fringe” politics and arguing that he supports “normal people.”
His views on immigration, he claimed, were those previously pushed by liberal lawmakers.
“It’s just normal people and here are the principles, and tell me which of these is terrible: that we should have secure borders, that we should have safe cities, that we should have sensible spending.
Which of those three are far-right, fringe?”
he asked.
“And I would like to admonish you and the media for the absurd characterization of the far right.
It is false, and misleading, and nonsense,” Musk said, turning to the camera crew to jokingly add: “Please keep this part in, don’t cut this part.”
The interview grew more heated when Beddoes pivoted to Musk’s online influence on X, noting his 250 million followers, and his previous posts warning that “civil war in Britain is inevitable , just a question of when.”
“On the current trends, yes,” Musk replied.
After asking when he had last visited the U.K., Beddoes noted Musk had not been there for “a few years.”
“Exactly, so I live there.
I’m there the whole time.
That is nonsense,” she snapped.
Musk responded: “You live in quite a cloistered existence.”
Beddoes pushed back, denying she did, arguing that “the numbers” also “disprove” Musk’s claim.
“What numbers?”
the mogul returned.
“All the numbers about crime,” Beddoes said.
“London is a much safer city than any city in the United States.
Violent crime in the U.K. is not where you think it is, in fact, it’s coming down.”
She continued: “You have painted, and because you have so many followers so many Americans believe it, a kind of view that Europe and the U.K. are kind of, you know, overrun with terrifying Muslim immigrants, there’s rape on every corner, there’s a sort of civilizational destruction.”
“I haven’t said any of those things,” Musk countered, adding: “If you have a large and growing, rapidly growing, group of people whose beliefs are antithetical to Western beliefs, at some point there will be a reckoning.”
He continued: “They will try to implement their views, and those who oppose it will oppose it, and that’s what you call civil war.
And obviously, this is the trend.”
“And you absolutely do live in a cloistered existence,” Musk insisted.
“And if you’d like, we can go on a tour of Britain, we can go on a walking tour, and you’ll see for yourself.”
Beddoes agreed she would be “very happy” to join Musk on the tour, saying: “You come see my country that I live in all the time and you haven’t been to [since] a few years ago.”
“I have been there literally a hundred times,” he replied.
“But when was the last time?”
the interviewer pressed.
“I think it was a few years ago,” he followed.
“You know why this exercises me?”
Beddoes concluded.
“Because you have really shaped opinion about the U.K. and so many Americans I come across and I have conversations with and I just had one the other day along the order of, ‘Oh, London is such a dangerous place.
How can you know there are sort of grooming gangs everywhere?
There’s violence everywhere.’”
“This is a picture that people get from things that you post or that are posted on X,” she argued.
