Political and community leaders throughout Harris County are calling for full transparency and a proper investigation after a Mexican citizen, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was killed by an ICE officer in Magnolia Park on Tuesday, July 7.
A spokesperson for ICE alleged that the shooting took place after Araujo drove a van into an ICE vehicle and tried to flee after a “targeted enforcement operation” early in the morning.
The ICE spokesperson also maintained the shooting was in self-defense.
Several Harris County leaders expressed their sympathy for the family, while also citing the need for a thorough and independent investigation into the shooting.
Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin, in a statement, said she shared a deep concern about what transpired.
“There must be a complete and transparent investigation, and my office stands ready to support our community and any local investigation into how this tragedy unfolded."
Houston city council member Alejandra Salinas echoed Kamin’s calls for an investigation.
“I am calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the prompt release of all video and investigative findings,” said Salinas.
“The public deserves a timely account of what happened, clear answers, and accountability.”
Many in the Houston community are also comparing the incident to what happened in Minneapolis in January, when an ICE officer shot and killed Renee Good.
Videos at the scene contradicted claims by ICE that Good was attempting to accelerate a vehicle on officers.

Sylvia Garcia (via Twitter ) In a press conference on Tuesday, Ronaldo Salgado, the victim’s oldest son, said his father was a hard-working individual who did not deserve what happened to him.
Salgado was joined by other community leaders in Houston, including Congressman Christian Menefee, the former Harris County Attorney.
Menefee reiterated calls for an investigation, while also noting his own role in a potential oversight.
A vigil was held for Salgado Araujo on Wednesday evening, with more demonstrations planned throughout the state in the coming days.
