Flint health event to focus on cancer awareness and prevention 29%

FLINT, Mich. — Hamilton Community Health Network and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. will host a men’s health event this weekend aimed at increasing awareness about cancer risks, preventive care and the importance of regular medical screenings.
The event, Real Talk About Men's Health and Cancer Risk, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026, at Hamilton Community Health Network's main clinic, 2900 N.
Saginaw St.
It will feature panel discussions and information about prostate cancer and other health concerns affecting men.
Clarence Pierce, CEO of Hamilton Community Health Network, said the event was created because men's health often receives less attention than it deserves.
"Very seldom do you see events where you're talking about or focusing on men in particular," Pierce said.
"We felt this would be a good time to put the focus on men to make sure that they get the information they need to make some decisions about their health."
Pierce said attendees can expect educational presentations about prostate cancer, discussions about recognizing warning signs and opportunities to ask questions of health professionals.
"We will provide education, health screenings and services for men," he said.
"We encourage all ages to come in and take advantage."
Pierce said many men delay seeking medical care because they were raised to ignore pain or discomfort.
"Men are often raised to ignore pain, don't complain, just keep on pushing," Pierce said.
"I like to encourage men to listen to your body.
Most of the time, if something is going on, your body will tell you, but we ignore it."
He encouraged men to schedule annual checkups and seek medical attention whenever something feels abnormal.
"Always get checked," Pierce said.
"Get your annual checkup.
But in particular, if you find something that's bothering you, be sure to go in and get that checked out."
Although the event is geared toward men, Pierce said women and younger men are also encouraged to attend.
"The younger you are when you learn about your health, the better it is," he said.
"Don't find yourself in your 50s before you realize, 'Well, I should have gotten that exam 10 years ago.'"
Registration is encouraged to help organizers estimate attendance, but walk-ins are welcome.
The event will include breakfast, giveaways and raffle prizes, including gift cards.
