A scenic beach in Southern California was closed over the weekend after high tides and large swells pounded a stretch of the Malibu (Los Angeles County) coast, officials said.
Vehicle access to Point Dume Beach, a popular spot with cliffs and rocky coves, has been cut off indefinitely after officials closed Westward Beach Road on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors.
There was no estimated time of reopening the road.
Officials urged people to not go around safety cones or cross caution tape or barriers, as entering the closed areas “could result in serious injury.”
“The bluff edge is unstable, with erosion creating drop-offs of up to 8 feet in some areas,” the department said.
A southerly swell generated by Hurricane Genevieve hit Southern California last week, according to the National Weather Service, causing “severe erosion.”
High tides also topped 6 feet most nights.
“The combination of large tides and Genevieve’s southerly swell contributed to significant coastal erosion along the Malibu Coast in Los Angeles County,” the weather service said.
Restrooms at the beach were also closed after erosion damaged a water line, according to the department, although temporary toilets and hand-washing stations were available nearby.
County officials said they were still assessing the damage and “will provide updates as information becomes available.”
