What Does DSA do in Between Elections? Turns Out, Quite a Lot. 61%

New York City DSA is best known for sive door-to-door canvassing opera- tion helped carry Zohran Mamdani all the way to City Hall.
This year, it swept June’s Democratic primaries, winning eight out of nine contested races across the city.
Come next January, socialists will hold three congressional seats from New York City and 16 seats in the state legislature.
Yet, running elections is only part of what NYC- DSA does.
The 16,000-member socialist organization also constantly engages in organizing campaigns that both benefit from the support of DSA elected officials and help build grassroots power that can feed into future electoral work.
Harkening back to an earlier era when large numbers of Americans participated in everything from labor unions to bridge clubs and bowling leagues, NYC-DSA also organizes a wide array of social, cultural, recreational and educational activities that build community and make it easy for people to socialize.

The Tenant Organizing Working Group (TOWG) seeds new tenant associations and strengthens exist- ing ones while bringing tenant leaders into the DSA.
In addition to the building canvasses, tenant association meetings, tabling events and organizing trainings helping at the local level, TOWG also coordinates a monthly tenant circle where tenants from across the city share knowledge, strategize collectively and build the confidence to take action.
With Mayor Mamdani and his Office of Mass Engagement aggressively urging tenants across the city to form tenant associations in their buildings to defend their rights, TOWG should be very busy in the months and years ahead.

The Labor Working Group works with labor unions and rank-and-file union workers to make existing unions more democratic, help create new unions, and support striking worker power as they did this past winter while backing the nurses union when it went out on strike for a month against the city’s wealthiest private hospitals.
The LWG is now focused on an even bigger corporate target: Amazon.
In July, it threw itself into a campaign to get City Council to pass the Delivery Protection Act sponsored by DSA Councilmember Tiffany Caban.
The measure would require Amazon to hire its delivery drivers as full-time workers — who would have the right to unionize — and end its exploitative subcontracting practices.
Door- to-door canvassing and phone banking is underway to build public support that can be used to pressure recalcitrant councilmembers to get on board.

Kathy Hochul to implement the BPRA’s provisions that would create a clean energy system owned by the people — not corporate investors.

Afrosocialists + Socialists of Color Caucus
AfroSoc creates space for Black, Indigenous and Peo- ple of Color members of DSA to organize autonomously, build confidence and skills, and articulate a political vision rooted in their communities.

The Socialist Feminists Working Group seeks to fight the oppression of cis women, trans people and gender non-conforming people through economic and social means.

The fight for a socialist future is a marathon not a sprint.
And members of the NYC-DSA Running Club are determined to get there together.
They hold regular runs of 3-5 miles in Central Park, Prospect Park, McCa- rren Park, Riverside Drive, Jackson Heights and the Lower East Side.

NYC-DSA’s socialist choir sings the songs of the in- ternational left.
It’s open to everyone whether they’re a DSA member or not.
No experience needed, and no auditions.
The choir performs at DSA public events and put on their own performances as well.

As NYC-DSA’s members get older and start families, Comrades with Kids makes it easier for them to remain politically active.
CwK runs a Signal chat where parents can commiserate and share parenting tips.
It organizes group play dates in the different boroughs.
And, it mobilizes parents around issues of special con- cern to them, such as winning universal pre-K and restricting AI usage in public schools.

The NYC DSA Academy for Socialist Education cov- ers a wide range of topics and is open to members and non-members.
This fall’s classes will be on how New York became America’s “red city”; the weaponization of immigration policy against the foreign-born work- ing class; the three faces of labor: race, gender and class; and the Frankfurt School on fascism.
Many of the teachers are CUNY professors.
