ET MLB trade deadline, the Red Sox have cannonballed into the pool with a trade for Baltimore Orioles star Adley Rutschman.
Rutschman, 28, is a three-time All-Star catcher and switch-hitter with one more year of club control remaining after this season.
He was Baltimore’s first overall pick in the 2019 draft, finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2022, and won a Silver Slugger Award and finished ninth in AL MVP voting in 2023.
“He’s a proven star in this league, we’ve obviously seen him a lot over the last few years in a position we felt like there was an opportunity to bring someone in and improve the outlook here,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Monday night.
“That’s not in any way to take away from what Connor and Narvy had been providing but felt like as we looked to upgrade the team that was an opportunity for us.
In Adley you get impact on both sides of the ball, he’s a premium defender, switch-hitter so he’s a great fit for our park, he doesn’t strike out, he walks and gets on base, he can hit for damage.
I think there’s a ton to like about him.”
The Red Sox, seeking offensive and catching upgrades, were linked to Rutschman for hours before ESPN’s Jeff Passan broke the news at 2:44 p.m.

The holdup, a source told to the Herald, was an extensive review of medicals in light of Rutschman’s injury; he is currently on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation.
Breslow said he isn’t ready to offer any timetable for Rutschman’s return to action, but said the catcher is feeling better.
“I think it’s best for him to get under our care and get our medical staff, our athletic trainers, our doctors’ hands on him and from there we’ll figure out what the right course of action is here,” Breslow said.
“But talking to him he’s very optimistic and he’s saying he feels quite a bit better.”
Rutschman, 28, is batting .251 with a .764 OPS over 67 games.
Behind the dish, he ranks in MLB’s 100th percentile in Caught-Stealing Above Average, 96th percentile in Fielding Run Value and 93rd percentile in Framing.
The Red Sox also get catcher Jake Rogers and cash in the deal, as first reported by Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
The Orioles are receiving a haul of talent in return for Rutschman.
Right-hander Anthony Eyanson, Boston’s No. 2 prospect, is the centerpiece of the five-player package, a source confirmed.
Enddy Azocar, Kyson Witherspoon, current big-league catcher Carlos Narváez comprise the remainder.
The Red Sox will also send a player to be named later.
All three prospects were in Boston’s top five, and Narváez is under club control through 2030.
