Police have arrested a Hayward teen they say shot his ex-girlfriend in the face in Berkeley in June.
They have also arrested his mother, who they say helped him flee the scene.
Police officers first went to the area near the Ashby BART station around 11 p.m.
June 14 to investigate a report of gunfire.
Once there, a 19-year-old woman, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the face, flagged them down, the Berkeley Police Department said at the time.
The woman’s ex-boyfriend, 19-year-old Darius E.
Tate, had attacked her inside an Ashby Avenue home more than a mile east of the BART station near Claremont Avenue, then shot her outside the home when she tried to drive away, according to a statement from police Thursday.
He also went through the woman’s car and stole cash, police said.
A passerby began to drive the woman to a hospital, but she got out near the Ashby BART station, where she met the officers, police said.
The Berkeley Fire Department took her the rest of the way to a hospital for treatment, and she is now recovering from her injuries, police said.
Meanwhile, Tate’s mother “picked him up after the shooting and provided him with a change of clothing to help him evade capture,” according to the statement.
Police arrested Tate Wednesday at a San Leandro apartment on suspicion of attempted murder, robbery, domestic violence, tampering with a vehicle and illegally carrying a loaded firearm in public, according to police and jail records.
He was in custody without bail Thursday afternoon at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
When police searched the apartment they found two loaded handguns and “additional evidence” tied to the June shooting, they said.
Police arrested Tate’s mother elsewhere in San Leandro on suspicion of acting as an accessory.
She was also in custody Thursday, with her bail set at $100,000, according to jail records.
Neither Tate nor his mother has yet been formally charged, according to court records.
