CORRALITOS — A bomb squad was called to the Corralitos area Tuesday after law enforcement discovered an explosive device inside a vehicle they had pulled over.
Deputies with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop at approximately 4 p.m.
Tuesday near the 2600 block of Freedom Boulevard.
During the stop, something in the vehicle triggered the agency’s K-9 unit to signal an alert, which prompted the deputies to conduct a search.
During that search, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect attempted to flee the scene but was detained without incident after a brief struggle.
Meanwhile, the vehicle search resulted in discovery of a loaded gun, suspected narcotics and a pipe bomb.
The deputies called in a bomb team to dispose of the device and implemented a closure of Freedom Boulevard from Bowker Road to Corralitos Road during the response.
By 7:16 p.m.
Tuesday, the bomb squad had safely detonated the device and the road was reopened later that evening.
The Sheriff’s Office did not respond to Sentinel questions about the identity of the suspect or the circumstances surrounding the traffic stop before print deadline Wednesday.
