My top 10 things to watch Monday, July 20
1.
This is a welcome sign: Stock futures are breaking the "Monday morning slide" pattern.
Biggest gainer is the Nasdaq, benefiting from strength in semiconductor names including SK Hynix .
Despite a weekend of more fighting in the Middle East, WTI crude is steady this morning.
2.
Plenty of stocks are working in this market, but spotting them requires looking beyond technology, where the once-hot trades have cooled.
That was the crux of my Sunday column for Investing Club subscribers.
3.
The reverberations of Chinese startup Moonshot AI's new Kimi K3 model are still being felt.
One of my biggest questions: Will large American corporations be comfortable switching to Kimi and having their data fed into a Chinese model?
There's a consistent lack of trust between the U.S. and China.
4.
Bristol Myers Squibb is buying Nvidia 's newest enterprise AI computing system to use for drug discovery and development.
Bristol Myers said using older Nvidia hardware has already changed its R&D process.
Now it's got more horsepower to work with.
Club names Eli Lilly and Nvidia also have a partnership for AI drug discovery.
5.
Can SpaceX break out of its slump?
Shares are up about 1% premarket.
The stock ended last week on a six-day losing streak and sits 8% below its IPO price of $135 (and almost 40% below its record close on June 16).
Amazingly, the decline seems orderly.
Short-selling pressure is playing a role, too.
After aborting a Starship test flight last week, SpaceX plans to try again this Thursday evening.
6.
Barclays increased its price target on Astera Labs , a hedge-fund favorite, to $325 from $200.
Kept its buy rating.
Analysts said spending from Amazon alone could provide over $3 billion in revenue for Astera, a fast-growing player in connectivity technology for AI compute.
Astera works closely with Nvidia.
7.
UBS started coverage of Honeywell Aerospace with a hold rating and a $231 price target, citing slower aftermarket growth.
Aftermarket consists of products and services needed after the initial aircraft sale, such as runway safety technology.
Big profit driver.
Aeromexico announced this morning that it would implement HONA's anti-collision Surface Alerts across its Boeing planes.
8.
Wells Fargo cut its Accenture price target to $194 from $200 but kept its buy rating.
Heaven forbid anyone would ever cut their rating on this one.
The analysts slightly raised their full-year earnings estimates after the consultancy's recent $5 billion debt raise and suggestion that $2 billion in share repurchases would be completed by the fourth quarter.
9.
Yeti got an upgrade to buy from hold at Goldman Sachs, which also raised its price target to $63 from $46.
The analysts said their channel checks showed the cooler company's growth outlook is "becoming more durable."
But they also cited some inventory constraints and planned restocking.
Been a forgettable couple of years for this stock.
10.
Citi analysts raised their PNC Financial price target to $290 from $280 and kept their buy rating.
PNC is a forever-loved regional.
Last Wednesday, PNC reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue in the second quarter.
Citi liked what it saw, as did others.
Lots of other analysts hiked their price targets last week.
