Charlotte has a new Indian restaurant, and it comes with a pedigree.
Zamindar's Clubhouse, which opened in June in South End at 155 New Bern St., is the work of Chef Vamshi Krishna Adi — the chef behind ISHQ in New York City, which earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand within months of opening.
In Charlotte, he's partnered with founder David Pandora to bring that same level of ambition to a concept inspired by the private clubhouses that shaped Indian social life and dining culture generations ago.
Zamindar's Clubhouse is a 7,500-square-foot space split into distinct zones — a dining room, a bar, a lounge and a patio — each meant to carry its own mood.
The high ceilings, deep colors and beautiful décor make the restaurant immediately feel elevated.
We started at the bar with a glass of Champagne while reviewing the cocktail menu.
We tried the Nilgiri Club, a gin-forward, botanical pour, and the Noor Mahal, which combines rose Campari and fig.
Both drinks were stunning, but the Nilgiri Club was our favorite.
The menu is extensive.
If you're not familiar with the dishes, don't be shy about asking; the staff walked us through several options and were happy to explain ingredients and spice levels.
As an appetizer, we tried the Jalebi Chaat — crispy jalebi paired with a beetroot and yogurt dip, playing sweet against tangy.
For our main courses, we ordered the house paneer, an Indian soft cheese served in a spicy cashew-tomato gravy, and a lobster tail finished in a mango-coconut sauce.
The paneer serving may look small, but it's very filling and comes with rice.
The garlic naan is a must-order.
Zamindar's Clubhouse is a great spot for a fancy date night or celebratory dinner.
The prices are on the higher end, but the serving sizes, taste and service itself felt worth it.
