What saddens David Sedaris about America
America 250. It's a real transition there that we're making.
The birthday's coming up of this country.
You live here now, but you lived in Europe for two decades or so. Is there something that you notice that has changed about this country since your return after having lived overseas? Like what what is the thing that has changed the most
I think the thing that's changed the most is just how uh divided the country's become, you know.
Just how um
Does that divide feed your writing at all?
Uh well I mean just may perhaps just in the way that I write about America.
But it it it it saddens me.
I mean you name a business and people will tell you you're not supposed to go there, you know, and you they're like, "Why am I not supposed to go there again?"
Uh if personal information gets out about an actor or a you know, a writer or a playwright, then all of a sudden like, "We're not going to that play anymore."
I don't I don't have to agree with everybody. I don't
Like when I don't agree with somebody, I like to ask them questions, right? I don't get up in their face. I want to understand why they think what they think.
to understand why they think that way.
What is the most American thing about you?
Um I how eager I am to talk about money.
I mean when we first moved to France, I realized, "Oh, people don't talk about money at all. They don't and uh but Americans do it. Australians do it quite often. But as an American, it's just uh you have to train yourself.
I mean in America, if you say to somebody, "That's a nice watch." They'll say, "It should be. It cost $35,000."
And I love that.
