Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce rehearsal dinner underway at Madison Square Garden, sources say
Tents, [music] heavy security, and Taylor Swift's car, all at New York's Madison Square Garden for the kickoff of the wedding festivities of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
The streets around the arena are closed as crews put the finishing touches on the decor and food for the couple's big day.
So, let's take a live look at Madison Square Garden
where about 100 of the couple's closest friends and family are believed to be celebrating on the eve of the wedding at a rehearsal dinner.
Swift's fans came out to see the arena to see what they could take a peek of.
>> I guess it it makes sense, but I I just don't think it's typical of her, but I'm sure it it'll be gorgeous and beautiful.
>> I definitely thought that you weren't going to hear about it until after it happened.
It's weird that we kind of know that it's going to happen beforehand, but no, she will definitely take the spotlight.
>> CBS News correspondent Joanie Chen is in New York. So, Joanie, okay, the anticipation has been building for days.
What is it like out there? Do we have any more details on the wedding? What do you know?
>> I'm standing here in front of Infosys Theater, and according to two law enforcement officials directly familiar with the security planning, they tell us here at CBS News that the rehearsal dinner is currently underway right behind me in Infosys Theater for about 100 people.
As for what it feels like out here, it is super hot. It's about 100°, and law enforcement is definitely on high alert.
You see many more NYPD officers all throughout Everyone wants to know what is happening inside Infosys Theater tonight.
We talked to People magazine's editor-in-chief, and here's what she had to say.
>> So, it's got like 100% ability to be locked down in terms of security, and she can transform it inside the way she has for some of her tours where she kind of makes them feel very intimate and stuff like that.
They're going to be in there tenting it, putting in flowers, installing Somebody said that they were installing something that's going to look like a castle inside.
>> We also know that throughout the past several days we've been here staked out at Madison Square Garden.
We've seen big trucks delivering food and supplies and fake trees and all kinds of different things.
A big white tent was built so that people can drive in and not be photographed on their way into the event.
And also Travis and Taylor today announcing through their long-time publicist Tree Paine that they are donating $26 million to 20 different charities all across the country.
They're organizations that are based in places where they have lived before or currently live.
They've got those deep ties. That includes the ASPCA, food banks, children's hospitals, musical education programs.
And so this is something Taylor Swift often does.
She did it regularly on the Eras Tour in cities where they stopped donating to food banks.
So really keeping up that trend and that pattern for her as a as a philanthropist as she is presumably in her rehearsal dinner right now.
>> Wow, the power couple that's definitely charitable.
So, you know, we've seen the barricades behind you.
You said the tents have gone up.
Obviously intense security, but how does this compare to other big events that you've seen in terms of security?
>> Well, New York City is known for high security that will be provided for these big events.
It's, you know, nothing that any New Yorker is not used to.
They just had the Knicks, right?
And so this is America 250.
This is Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding.
There's a lot of intense activity here.
Plus everyone maybe going away for the holiday weekend.
You have to remember that Madison Square Garden sits right on top of Penn Station, which is one of the busiest hub.
So what we do know is law enforcement sources are telling us 135 NYPD officers are stationed here around this perimeter for the next couple of days.
Now the permitting allows for the host of the event at MSG to reimburse the city for overtime. Traditionally, hosts of events have done that.
We do not know if Taylor and Travis plan to do that, but I can tell you if they did, just based on talking to people here over the past few days, it would certainly build a little bit of good karma.
>> All right, Jolene Ken. Jolene, thank you so much.
