Brothers and controversial social media
influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate were ordered to remain behind bars in Miami
as they wait possible extradition to the UK over allegations of rape and sex trafficking.
The duo is prominent within the so-called manosphere online spaces that often promote misogyny and masculinity.
CBS News correspondent Cristian Benvdas has more.
>> A court hearing took place earlier today.
It was a procedural hearing after the Tate brothers were arrested over the weekend as they were heading to a boxing match that one of them was set to co-host.
Now, the court hearing was unsealed at the last minute after petitions from media organizations.
The hearing lasted just about 10 minutes.
The tape brothers were wearing a prison uniform, short-sleeved gray shirts, and they were shackled.
US Magistrate Judge Lauren Lewis informed them of their right to remain silent.
They said, "Yes, your honor."
The judge informed them that they were wanted for a provisional arrest warrant out of the UK and that extradition proceedings have already begun.
Attorneys for the Tape brothers requested a status hearing for next Monday to develop a scheduling order to contest extradition and contest bail.
Now, British prosecutors say four more victims came forward with new allegations against the tapes, which include rape, sex trafficking, and child and extreme pornography.
The brothers were already facing similar charges from three other accusers.
Together, the brothers are looking at nearly 60 charges in the UK.
In 2022, the Tates were arrested in Romania on charges of rape, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation.
That case did not go to trial, but remains open.
Last year, after Romania lifted the brothers travel restrictions, they flew to Florida on a private jet.
And now the state of Florida says it is also investigating the brothers for similar allegations.
The Tates are ardent Trump supporters and their attorneys publicly said today that they hope that the Trump administration will intervene in their extradition.
