Trump focuses America's 250th anniversary speech on Communism and unity
spring,
NBC's Julie Tsirkin, who is out at the Mount Rushmore event.
Julie, what can we take away from the president's remarks?
He pretty much stuck to that time that he said.
>> [music] >> He pretty much stuck to that timing,
Elise. He pretty much stuck to his script. You could tell when he started to go off script, [music]
but that also gave us a sense as to who this audience is. Mostly, clearly, filled with supporters of the president.
When he talked about the say back, for example, when he talked about giving Iran a week off, a lot of cheers, a lot of applause.
As you see the fireworks start to begin above me here.
This is a crowd, Elise, that has been here since 1:00 p.m. today.
They have gone through multiple shelter in place, and they told me earlier what they wanted to hear from the president is unity, and [music]
certainly that is what they got tonight.
The president spending a lot of his speech also talking about communism, [music] saying that it's the very opposite uh to the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that is at the root and foundation of this country.
very on topic uh theme and message from the president tonight previewing the Independence Day celebrations in Washington D.C. [music] tomorrow, but display of fireworks above me right now.
The second time in the last decade, the last time in 2020,
>> [music] >> and of course all of this happening tonight ahead of the nation's 250th birthday.
a speech by the president that was well received here tonight.
Loud applause as the president we are told is sticking around to watch the fireworks here,
Elise.
>> Now, thank you for that recap, Julie. Now, we do know that the president was just in North Dakota about 4 hours from where you are uh earlier today. Just uh excuse me, earlier this week, about a couple days ago. He could have given this chat, this speech anywhere tonight. Any indication as to why he chose to return to the Dakotas to bring his [music] family with him and deliver this speech to the American people at the base of Mount Rushmore?
>> At least we know that this has been something that has been in the works for a year. I spoke to some of the people planning this today, and that's what they told me. But, we also know this is by design of the president.
Interior Secretary and the former governor of North Dakota, Doug Burgum, took the stage and introduced the president, he actually said that this type of celebration wasn't possible
[music] since the last time the president spoke here in 2020. And that is in part
because the National Park Service is concerned about the fire risk posed [music] by these fireworks to all of the brush and nature around here. It's very dry in this area normally at this time of year. But, the president is also infatuated with the idea of Mount Rushmore. [music] He has joked several times about being a possible fifth addition to this granite sculpture behind me.
He didn't mention it today in his speech, uh but I have to tell [music] you I spoke to a number of his supporters. I spoke to President Roosevelt here today, uh four individuals who were dressed like the presidents behind me. They told me the president wouldn't fit uh on Mount Rushmore, but we certainly know the president has said before he wants to be on it, and he values the grandeur and what the meaning uh is behind a place like Mount Rushmore. And by the way, South Dakota, a very red state, [music] and a lot of support for the president here, as he pointed out uh in his speech. Elise?
