The October surprise we all saw coming

just 3 months sooner. A huge and still growing list of Democrats now calling on Maine Senate candidate Grant Plathner to drop out of the race after a woman spoke out accusing him of rape.

>> Douglas Adair is live in Washington with all of those details. [snorts] Hi Doug.

>> Good morning. These accusations were first really fully revealed in Politico.

A a woman claiming Plathner sexually assaulted her nearly 5 years ago despite her repeated objections.

Now, Plathner and his accuser reportedly had something of an on-and-off relationship.

She says he entered her Maine home uninvited late one night while intoxicated and forced himself on her.

And she details the incident in an interview with CNN.

>> I recognized his level of intoxication and I knew in that moment I wasn't safe.

And I don't think I was I don't think I was safe to physically fight back.

Um, he's big. He's strong. He was heavily intoxicated, had intentions with me, and wasn't listening when I said no.

>> But Plathner meantime is denying the allegations.

>> I wanted to directly address the troubling, serious, and false allegations against me.

Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically false, regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality will inflict.

We are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward for the state that I love, the people that I love, the movement I belong to, and the goal of defeating Susan Collins.

Those were the goals when we launched this campaign.

And they remain my goals today.
