Dangerous and deadly Fourth of July weekend on the water
to the water dangers as millions across the country head to the beach. In
Florida, two people were killed and more than 350 others rescued over the long holiday weekend. Here's ABC's Morgan Norwood.
>> Tonight, a dangerous and deadly holiday weekend on the water.
>> I'm going in the water right now.
>> A sheriff's deputy dropping his gear to rescue a swimmer caught in a rip current.
>> She was trying to get on her board and they got pulled out.
She was struggling.
>> One of more than 350 rescues this weekend in Florida's Volusia County. Tragically, two swimmers there died.
Drones, helicopters, boats, and dozens of lifeguards scouring Daytona Beach after 17-year-old Marion Anthony vanished in the rough surf. Lifeguards spotted the teen and a friend struggling before they disappeared. The friend pulled to safety. Anthony's body found hours later. His death just moments after a separate drowning claimed the life of a 60-year-old man at that same beach.
On New York's Long Island, a different threat.
>> Someone came up to the lifeguard and said shark.
>> This image appears to show a victim being carried away by lifeguards after being bitten by a shark. The beach temporarily cleared.
The dangers on the water weren't just limited to the beach.
>> The boat exploded. Multiple injuries advised at least one in the water.
>> In Maryland, a boat explosion injuring at least nine people. Sending four to hospitals by helicopter.
In Wisconsin, a sudden storm sweeping across Geneva Lake overtaking a boat carrying 10 people. The vessel capsized and sank killing three children.
>> We were informed that a boat had overturned on Geneva Lake. Seven people were rescued from the water. Unfortunately, there was three fatalities of people who were not able to be rescued.
>> And with back to that rip current danger, experts say you should always swim near a lifeguard. But if you're caught in one, you want to swim parallel to the shore and then float until you're freed of that current. What?
