And we do have [music] breaking news. Maine Senate candidate Blaine Platner is suspending his campaign and will withdraw from the ballot. In a statement, he said what comes next needs to come from the people of Maine. We believe that for the movement to continue, it can't be me. For that reason, we are suspending campaign operations. Our senior White House correspondent Selina Wang joins us now. Selina, it feels like this has been several days in the making. Of course, there was that bombshell allegation
against Platner of rape, allegations that he denies. Do we have a sense what finally made him decide that this was really the the only course of of action left? >> Yeah, Lindsey. Well, I think this was culminating to your point for quite some time. I mean, it just became at a certain point untenable for him to stay in the race. And the big question was when and how was he going to announce to his withdrawal. So, we're finally getting this via a video message. And what he said in the video that what
comes next needs to come from the people of Maine. Uh he continued to say that we believe that for the movement to continue, it can't be me. For that reason, we are suspending campaign operations. Um earlier in the video, he also said that he learned about this through press inquiries with no time to truly respond, no time for investigations before a quote corporate media system and the political establishment got to act as judge, jury, and execution executioner. Accusations are supposed to be the beginning of
things, not the end. So, clearly, he is still defiant. He is of course denying all of these allegations, but it wasn't just one or two bad articles. It was a string of them over the course of several weeks, Lindsey.
