Democrats pull endorsements for Graham Platner after sexual assault allegation
Maine Senate candidate Ryan Platner has been accused of drunkenly forcing a woman he previously dated to have sex with him after she told him to stop
according to a political report released Monday.
Maine resident Jenny Rasico told Politico that Platner entered her home in 2021 while drunk and assaulted her.
Rasico said she had been in an on-and-off relationship with Platner, but she had cut off contact with him after that night and told him the incident was not consensual.
A voicemail left by the Associated Press at a number listed for Rasico seeking comment did not receive an immediate response.
In the wake of the new allegation, Democrats began withdrawing their endorsements of Platner, including California Representative Ro Khanna and Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego.
In a video posted to social media, Platner denied the allegation and said he would be considering next steps for his campaign.
>> Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.
>> As of Monday, Platner has canceled a handful of campaign town halls planned in Maine.
Platner secured the nomination to become Maine's Democratic Senate candidate last month, but state law does include a provision for Democrats to replace him ahead of the general election if he were to withdraw.
The AP generally does not name victims of sexual assault, but in this case Rasico spoke in an interview with Politico.
