She was later sent to Europe by her family. 
The works became a successful animated film adaptation. 
In a statement, the French presidency calls her a great artist who transformed an Iranian childhood into a universal fable. 
Satrapi was also known for her outspoken criticism of Iran's regime and her advocacy for women's rights. 
She moved to France in the 1990s and 
became a French citizen in 2006.
