Le Pen's future as French presidential contender hinges on Paris appeals court ruling
The key element here is this extraordinary decision by the original court, the original judgment, which basically made her ineligible to stand for election for 5 years. And that ruled her out of of the election pending the the appeal.
So, if the court decides, the appeal court decides to change that, to reduce the period of ineligibility, and to not have it run during a another appeal that she might make, then there's a a small possibility that she can she can stand in the election.
>> [cheering] >> I think it's immensely significant because, you know, she has been for a long time one of the leading candidates for the French presidential election next year.
And she's, you know, she if she was able to stand, she would be very likely to win that election.
So, it's it's it's massively significant.
One of the intriguing things about the Rassemblement National, the far-right party she she represents and she she helped to to lead for many years, is that they have two candidates who could stand for president.
So, if she can't, if the court ruling means that she can't stand at all, then extraordinarily they have a young her young protégé, Jordan Bardella, who can stand in her stead.
And he's actually even more popular than she is
in the in the opinion polls. But there's no doubt that Marine Le Pen has been phenomenally successful in normalizing a party that was seen as extreme, neo-fascist, neo-Nazi, anti-Semitic.
So, this is not a fringe party. It used to be a fringe party, and that is down to her.
is a political tragedy for her.
