Graham Platner loses key endorsement amid sexual assault allegation
Breaking tonight, as mentioned at the top of the show, a new sexual assault allegation against the Democratic nominee for US Senator from Maine.
Grant Platner is calling the accusation by a former girlfriend troubling, serious, and false. >> [snorts] >> But, he's also saying he's pausing to consider what to do next.
Correspondent Alexis McAdams is live tonight with the latest there.
Good evening, Alexis.
>> Brett, good evening.
Tonight, the Maine Democratic Party is urging Grant Platner to drop out of the Maine Senate race.
This is after her next girlfriend says, back in 2021, he showed up at her house very drunk and forced himself on her, even though she says she repeatedly told him to stop.
So, this is what we know.
Jenny Rackacot is a woman from Maine now accusing Platner of sexual assault.
She talked to Politico in a new report saying, "I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful on me.
I remember the specific moment where I thought to myself, like, this is no longer my choice at this point."
"I'd been telling him these words, like, don't," she recalled.
And Rackacot also told Politico she tried to separate herself from Platner by telling him she could not be in that room anymore, after which she says he just followed her to the bedroom and had sex with her against her will.
Platner denies the allegation and says he is weighing his options.
>> Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically false, regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality will inflict.
We are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward for the state that I love.
>> But, it's important to point out this is not the first controversy for Platner's campaign.
He had a Nazi symbol on his chest, uh that was a tattoo he later removed.
Then, the allegations of physical abuse, and he was sexting with other women while he was married.
But, despite all that, Democrats stood by his side until tonight.
Democratic California Congressman Ro Khanna, who campaigned with Platner for a while, among those telling him to drop out, he posted this, Brett.
"I've been very clear that sexual assault or violence against women is a red line.
These allegations are very serious and credible.
Glenn Platner should drop out from the race.
I'm withdrawing my endorsement.
We're going to keep an eye on the fallout here again tonight.
And Republican Senator Susan Collins, Brett, Collins' allegations absolutely appalling, but Collins says it's not up to her to choose the Democratic nominee for Senate.
If Platner does drop out, he'd have to withdraw by July 13th for Democrats to replace him on that ballot in Maine, Brett.
>> That's coming up quickly.
Alexis, thank you.
