And officials are issuing a new warning about the deadliest wildfire to hit Spain in years. A heatwave with temperatures around 104° has caused wildfires all across Southern Europe. Now, Andalusian officials say 11 people are dead and 19 others are still missing, and they say the full scale of the disaster is just beginning. ABC News Tom Soufi Burridge has more on those growing wildfires. Hi, Tom. So, what's the latest on this and what officials are saying? >> Yeah, Diane. I mean, this was a truly
tragic night in Almería. That's a province of Andalusia, right down in the southeast of Spain in a very rural, remote area. These houses nestled in amongst the forest, according to local officials. And they say that basically the fire spread incredibly quickly. Look, we're in the middle of a third heatwave so far this summer. Temperatures are up into the 90s down in Southern Spain. And basically these flames spread very quickly. Now, there were warnings, according to Spanish media, from the local mayor in
this commune called Los Los Gallardos. It's about 3,000 people. And basically some people apparently remained put initially and then tried to exit out away from the wildfires, according to the head of the regional Andalusian government. They did not follow the prescribed evacuation route from the authorities. And tragically now, the death toll has actually risen, according to the regional government. It is now at 12 people dead and 23 people unaccounted for. So, this is clearly one of the
deadliest wildfires in recent Spanish history. >> Tom, what are you watching for next year? >> Well, the fire is still spreading, according to the head of the regional government down there, Diane. So, I think look, the the resources being invested into containing it now are considerable. They say that at least 12 aircraft are being used. Hundreds of firefighters, police on the ground trying to fight the fire, too. The the are not favorable. It's very, very dry in that part of Europe and in many other
parts of Europe. We've had wildfires in Spain as well. Uh sorry, in France earlier this week. Uh but in that part of Spain, it's a particularly catastrophic situation overnight. It shows how quickly things can change, how dangerous the situation can be. And sadly, it does appear that there were two groups of people in amongst the 12 people killed. Uh four people according to local officials got trapped in a car trying to drive away from the fire. And the other people also uh feared to be
non-Spanish foreign nationals uh were also trying to walk away from the wildfire. And it appears, according to local officials, they just got trapped and couldn't find their way out. So, it shows how unpredictable the situation it is. But I think across Europe right now, it has to be emphasized that people are really reflecting about climate change, about how Europe is heating up as a as a continent. We're really suffering the effects of it. Not only these wildfires, but also people's way of life has really
been brought into question this summer. Diane? >> Tamsin Mure Bridge, thank you.
