House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Tuesday that he is too “busy” to follow developments on the case of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, the 26-year-old Maine resident who was shot and killed by an agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement
“I don’t know anything about this event.
Okay?
I got a little busy yesterday, so I’m going to reserve judgment,” Johnson said after he was asked about the case.
“I know that there was a tragic shooting.
And I’m not going to comment on it because I don’t know.
And you guys can mock me for not knowing that.
I worked about 22 hours in the last few days, and I did not get the briefing on that yet.
I will this morning.”
Durán Guerrero was a 26-year-old immigrant from Colombia and father to a young child.
Presente!
Maine, an immigration advocacy nonprofit, said Durán Guerrero was legally authorized to work in the United States and had a Social Security number.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security claimed that an ICE officer shot and killed Durán Guerrero after “fearing for public safety” while conducting a vehicle stop.
DHS and ICE have frequently lied to the public about fatal shootings.
One eyewitness told a local TV station that he heard Durán Guerrero tell the agents he was trying to stop his car as they shot him.
Democratic Rep.
Chellie Pingree of Maine wrote on the Bluesky social media platform, “They think they’re above the law.
We will not let them get away with this.
Abolish ICE.”
Both Pingree and Maine Sen.
Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, have confirmed that Durán Guerrero was not the target of an ICE warrant, despite losing his life over the incident.
Johnson, a Republican, has shown a knack for being ignorant of a wide array of events.
Frequently, when he has been asked to comment on bizarre statements from Trump, the fallout from Trump’s policies, or controversies involving Congress, Johnson has claimed that he is unaware.
As head of the House, Johnson is second in the presidential line of succession, after Vice President JD Vance.
He is responsible for the House, whose constitutional role is oversight of the federal government, including agencies like DHS.
ICE has killed multiple people since Trump was sworn back into office in 2025, all while carrying out Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.
Johnson has pushed for continued funding for the agency over Democratic objections and has even argued that ICE agents should be allowed to execute their authority while hiding their identities.
Maine residents have taken to the streets to protest the killing of their neighbor, and the story has now gone international.
The Colombian government issued a release calling for an investigation.
DHS has now claimed it will now broadly pause traffic stops following the Maine shooting and the killing of Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
But Johnson is too “busy” to look into all of that, and he wants the press to stop bothering him about it all.
