Austin FC winger Jayden Nelson was not in the proper frame of mind to come off the bench in a 3-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo, according to interim head coach Davy Arnaud
You’d have a hard time imagining a more discouraging week for Austin FC than the one that’s just passed, with crises of both the on- and off-pitch variety recently befalling the Verde and Black.
On the pitch, the club threw away all momentum gained from its first regular season match following the World Cup break – a 3-1 win at home against the Seattle Sounders on July 22 – by completely failing to show up against the Houston Dynamo Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium.
Austin conceded three goals before halftime, all directly off of long Houston passes over the head of ATXFC’s bumbling defensive back line.
Losing track of runners, failing to win aerial duels, misreading bounces, you name it.
A total defensive meltdown.
To concede twice in that manner was bad enough.
Then Houston’s third goal hit the net just 20 seconds after Austin restarted play from the kickoff following the second goal in a moment that seemed straight out of a slapstick comedy cartoon.
By the 80th minute, Austin had failed to create much of anything offensively, so interim coach Davy Arnaud looked to his bench and called on dynamic winger Jayden Nelson to ready himself for his first MLS minutes since returning from World Cup duty with Canada (Nelson was the only current Austin FC player to make a World Cup roster).
Nelson stripped off his warmups and donned his jersey, but before he ever got to the fourth official to officially check into the match, Arnaud apparently saw or heard something from Nelson that he didn’t like, and sent Nelson back to the bench and brought in Žan Kolmanič instead.
Asked about it after the match, Arnaud was vague on the details but still offered one of the more damning assessments of a player that you’ll ever hear a coach make publicly.
“We were excited to get Jayden in the game to come in, you know, for the last 10 minutes and affect the game in a good way.
And once he came over, he wasn’t, you know, we didn’t feel like he was in the mindset to go in the game,” Arnaud said.
“We have to assess if a player is ready to go in the game, and he just wasn’t in a good mindset to come in the game, and we can’t have that coming into the game.
We want guys that are locked in and ready to go, and [Kolmanič] was, and so we made that choice.”
Needless to say, none of this bodes well for Austin FC as it relates to one of the club’s most talented attackers.
Also over the weekend, troubling news broke from The Guardian that Austin police and the FBI are investigating allegations of youth-on-youth sexual abuse within the Austin FC Academy system.
The club provided additional details in a statement Friday, saying, “In December 2025, we became aware of allegations of youth-on-youth misconduct occurring among a group of Academy players.
After learning of these issues from concerned Academy families, Austin FC Academy took immediate action,” which included reporting the incident to law enforcement and suspending and expelling players involved.
No specifics regarding what behavior took place or who was directly involved were provided.
The Austin FC Academy fields youth teams of age groups ranging from U13 to U19.
