State Dept Responds Accordingly to News of Mamdani Official's Plan to Meet With Iran's UN Ambassador - RedState

It's no big secret that New York City's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, hates America , so it stands to reason that most, if not all, of the people he brought on to work in his administration would likely share a similar mindset.

When Operation Epic Fury got underway in late February, it was not a shock to see the democratic socialist react with such outrage, proclaiming that the strikes "mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal act of war of aggression,” while adding that "bombing cities, killing civilians, opening up a new theater of war — Americans do not want this."

In April, Mamdani would reveal another reason he was against the operation: Because it was helping further expose an inconvenient truth about the Big Apple. "While this war has exacerbated a cost-of-living crisis, that is a crisis that existed from even before the time I was running for mayor, and it’s reflected in the fact that we are the most expensive city in the United States of America," he told NBC News at the time.

With all of that in mind, raise your hand if you didn't see this one coming a mile away: an official in the Mamdani administration had plans to meet with Iran's United Nations ambassador just two days ago... but got shut down by the State Department once they learned of it:

Commissioner Ana María Archila was scheduled to meet with Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, at 2 United Nations Plaza, alongside two other senior officials in the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs on July 7 at 11 a.m.—this according to screenshots of a calendar invitation reviewed by City Journal and confirmed by a source connected to the international affairs community and another familiar with Archila’s office. Another official within the State Department also confirmed awareness of the Mamdani administration’s impending engagement.

The meeting between Archila and Iravani was called off after the State Department—which was not informed ahead of time—met with the Mamdani administration to clarify acceptable conduct, according to the State Department official. City Journal learned that Commissioner Archila allegedly did not inform Mayor Mamdani of the meeting; she was reprimanded for the move and directed to cancel the meeting according to the source familiar with the office.

City Journal also pointed out that this wasn't the first time that the State Department stepped in and nixed plans for meetings between members of the Mamdani administration and foreign officials:

The administration’s international ambitions have not been limited to public comments. Last month, Mamdani intended to meet with leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro. The meeting was called off after the State Department declined to issue a visa following Petro’s attendance at a rally hosted by Mamdani in September. Archila’s international meetings include a two-day trip to Barcelona in April to participate in a conference hosted by the Party of European Socialists.

Relatedly, I couldn't help but contrast news of the almost-meeting with the ambassador for the murderous Iranian regime with the fact that Mamdani came into office vowing to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he ever set foot in New York City:

Team Mamdani will meet with representatives of the murderous Islamic Republic of Iran—which has the blood of thousands of Americans on its hands, and threatens to arrest the democratically elected Prime Minister of Israel.

Also recall that back in January, after Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro was taken into custody by U.S. forces, Mamdani - who opposed the move against his socialist comrade - bizarrely stated during a presser that he had been " briefed " on the operation, leaving many perplexed as to how a guy who hated his country as much as Mamdani does was able to obtain the necessary security clearance to be briefed on something as sensitive as this.

He would later humiliatingly have to clarify that the "briefing" had actually been done by his team, and admit that "the question of federal security clearance is one that's [ongoing]."

"Ongoing"? In my opinion, he should not ever be granted such a clearance, nor should any member of his administration, and the attempted undermining of U.S. foreign policy towards Iran (which I'm not buying that he was supposedly unaware of) emphasizes the point even more.
