Chuck Carpenter was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Avonworth High School and went on to study at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania on a naval ROTC scholarship. After graduation, he served in the US Navy, sailing aboard the USS Newport News and USS Little Rock. He first became interested in the practice of law while serving as a ship legal officer on the Little Rock.
In the summer of 1961, after being discharged from the Navy in the south of France, he traveled through Europe and on to Berlin, Germany. There he met his future wife, Christa, while visiting the city during the last 2 days before the Berlin Wall went up. He returned to the US, enrolled in the University of Colorado Law School, and in 1962 after spending just 6 weeks together in person, he and Christa married.
He graduated from CU Law School, clerked for US District Court Judge Alfred Arraj, and then joined the Denver law firm Fairfield & Woods. He remained with the firm for his entire distinguished 55-year legal career, specializing in real estate and corporate law. He took great pride in mentoring young lawyers and nurturing the unique culture of the firm.
Chuck loved living in Colorado, especially playing golf and chasing trout with a fly rod in hand — an activity he pursued enthusiastically anywhere, any time of day, in any weather. After a long life well-lived, he died peacefully with family at his side. He is survived by his wife Christa, 3 children, Todd (Janney), Scott (Sara), and Jill, 7 grandchildren, and his sister, Lucy Showalter.
If you would like to make a gift in his memory, we suggest a donation in his honor to the University of Colorado Law School or to Colorado Open Lands.
