A mother and her baby died late Saturday night when a boat capsized just off Liberty Island. 
According to police sources, the recreational motorboat was spotted in distress just before 10:30 p.m., prompting a passing vessel to stop and help pull passengers in the water to safety. 
About a dozen individuals were rescued before police arrived. 
The NYPD harbor unit responded and was able to locate a 27-year-old woman and her 5-month-old baby girl in grave condition. 
All victims were rushed to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, but the mother and daughter could not be saved. 
Their identities are pending proper family notification. 
The cause of the incident is still under investigation, police said.
