Two drivers struck and killed a 40-year-old man as he walked across a Bronx road over the weekend, NYPD officials said Monday.
The unidentified man was crossing Bruckner Boulevard from east to west near East 138th Street in Mott Haven around 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, according to police.
A tractor-trailer driver struck him outside of a crosswalk, and he fell to the pavement with severe body trauma, officials said.
Almost immediately after the man was struck, the NYPD said, the driver of a 2015 Honda CR-V taxi struck him while he was still on the ground.
Police said emergency medical workers responded to the incident and took the man to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The taxi driver, a 61-year-old man, stayed on the scene, but the tractor-trailer driver fled, officials said.
Police said they had made no arrests in the case as of Monday morning, and the investigation is ongoing.
NYPD data shows traffic deaths citywide are down roughly 5% so far this year through April 26, compared to the same period last year.
Last year had a record-low number of such deaths, city officials said.
