BRIGHTON, Mich. – An Ann Arbor woman died in a crash after running out of a car during an argument onto M-14.
Brighton troopers say they responded to a traffic crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on westbound M-14 near Wagner Road at around 11 p.m. on August 2.
According to preliminary investigation the pedestrian, a 45-year-old from Ann Arbor was a passenger in a 32-year-old Ann Arbor woman’s Ford Explorer.
Investigators say prior to the incident, both woman were drinking at a restaurant together, once they were in the car the two had an argument and the 45-year-old woman demanded to be let out of the vehicle opening the car door while the car was in motion.
Once the driver pulled over police say the 45-year-old ran out of the car onto the westbound lanes of M-14 and was struck by a Jeep Compass.
Police say the 45-year-old Ann Arbor man driving the Jeep originally believed he had struck a deer, was not injured nor determined to under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Authorities say the 45-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators the driver of the Ford Explorer checked on her friend, saw she had died, then left the scene.
Later troopers located the driver of the Ford Explorer, they say she told them she left because she “panicked”.
The investigation determined that she had been operating the vehicle while intoxicated.
Troopers will submit a report to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review of possible charges on the driver of the Ford Explorer.
The investigation is ongoing.
