Federal prosecutors last week announced charges against a Houston man who they accuse of forcing a teen girl into prostitution, holding her against her will and torturing her.
The sexual exploitation charges include allegations that the girl was burned with a lighter and forced to have sex with a man on camera.

Prosecutors allege Jaelyn “Spider” Churchwell, 22, is a pimp who also planned murders of three other people, including the man featured in the sex tape now at the center of the federal indictment, according to court records.
Churchwell has been in Harris County jail since 2024 on state charges related to the abuse of the teenager.
He has denied the allegations and is awaiting trial.
Churchwell was order to stay in custody until his trial.
As of Wednesday, he had not entered a plea related to the federal charges.
An attorney for Churchwell in the federal case declined to comment.
Multiple possible trafficking victims
A criminal complaint filed at the end of June in the Southern District of Texas charged Churchwell with sexual exploitation of children.
Federal prosecutors filed the complaint more than two years after he was arrested and charged in Harris County with unlawful restraint and aggravated assault.
He was later charged with sex trafficking, according to court records.
Churchwell was transferred to federal custody Friday.

Both the state and federal cases are related to accusations that Churchwell and two other men held the 16-year-old girl against her will and forced her into sex work from November 2023 to January 2024, according to court records.
The victim is only identified in court records by her initials.
Harris County court filings show prosecutors plan to present evidence they say links Churchwell to the trafficking of two other victims, identified only by their initials.
The Chronicle doesn't identify victims of sex trafficking.
The 16-year-old girl met Churchwell in November 2023 and came to Houston with him on the premise of selling marijuana, according to a criminal complaint against Keneth Rodriguez, 21, one of the other men.
Churchwell, Rodriguez and another man, Jonathan Smith, then forced the girl into prostitution around the Bissonnet and Tidwell area, authorities allege in court records.
An attorney for Rodriguez did not respond to request for comment.
Rodriguez shot at the victim in December 2023 after she “joked” about escaping, court records allege.
Rodriguez is facing an aggravated assault charge in Harris County in connection with the incident.
Houston police rescued the victim from a home in northwest Houston in January 2024 after she texted her mother that Churchwell was holding her against her will in January 2024, according to the federal complaint.
A grand jury in April 2024 indicted Churchwell on charges of aggravated assault.
The victim told police Churchwell had repeatedly used a broken plate to cut her arms, burned her upper body using hair spray to ignite the fire and strangled her with an extension cord, according to the complaint.
She told police she was raped and tortured for three days straight before being rescued, according to court records.
A video from the victim’s cell phone shows her being forced to have sex with Smith, and Churchwell was seen in the video as well, an FBI agent wrote in the federal criminal complaint.
Smith was found dead from a gunshot wound in Februray 2024, according to court records.
Another man, Michael Moody, 22, was sentenced to 39 years in state prison in April in relation to Smith's murder.
However, prosecutors with the Harris County District Attorney's Office said in a filing that they planned to tell the court during Churchwell's trial that they suspect he was involved in planning Smith's murder.
Smith was never charged in connection with the trafficking case.
Man who police identified as a witness dies of gunshot wound
Court filings prepared in Harris County since Churchwell’s arrest revealed prosecutors intend to present evidence they say connects Churchwell to two other murder investigations.
One of the investigations is into the death of a woman identified in court records as Sarine Dickerson.
The Chronicle could not identify an autopsy report connected to Dickerson’s death.
Another man, Michael Smith, was found dead in late August of 2024 from a gunshot wound, according to court records.
Prosecutors claim Smith came to the home shortly before the victim was rescued and convinced Churchwell to give the victim back her phone, which she used to contact her mother, which led police to the home.
Court records don't offer details on what relationship Smith had to the victim or Churchwell.
“I believe that Michael Smith was killed because he is a witness to this vice investigation,” a Houston Police officer wrote in a criminal complaint against Rodriguez.
Rodriguez's jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 28 in Harris County.
Churchwell's federal trial has not yet been scheduled.
