One person died and six others were taken to the hospital after a multi-alarm fire at the Cypresswood Apartments in the Klein area overnight.
The first arriving units encountered heavy fire coming through the roof and a partial structural collapse at the complex near Cypresswood Drive at Kuykendahl Road, northwest of Houston, according to a social media post by Harris County ESD 16 - Klein Fire Department.
The fire destroyed an eight-unit building, displacing approximately 25 residents.
Additionally, five firefighters were treated on scene for heat exhaustion, dehydration and smoke inhalation.
Before fire units arrived, Harris County Sheriff's Office officers were in the area on an unrelated call and deputies spotted smoke.
Deputies and neighbors within the complex started knocking on doors and evacuating residents, according to the post.
Klein Fire Department and mutual aid partners, including Spring Fire Department, Ponderosa Fire Department, Harris County ESD 17 - Little York Fire Department and Northwest Volunteer Fire Department responded.
"Please keep the affected families and our first responders in your thoughts today," according to the post.
"We extend our deepest gratitude to the neighbors who jumped into action, HCSO, ESD 11, Spring FD, Ponderosa FD, Little York FD, and Northwest VFD for their seamless coordination during this tragedy."
The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to investigate the apartment fire.
