A residential burglary escalated into a high-stakes standoff Sunday morning after a suspect barricaded himself inside a Jonesboro home, triggering street closures and a tactical response before all three suspects were safely jailed, authorities said.
A homeowner using a video surveillance system watched unknown individuals enter her home in the 7000 block of Mt.
Zion Boulevard at approximately 8:46 a.m.
Sunday, according to the Clayton County Police Department.
Responding officers quickly arrived at the scene and immediately took 34-year-old Christina Mays and 38-year-old Brandon McElwaney into custody.
Investigators then discovered that a third man, identified as Peter Phoumivang, remained barricaded inside the residence.
The department's SWAT team established a secure perimeter and utilized tactical resources to safely apprehend Phoumivang without further incident.
All suspects face charges of first-degree burglary and impersonating a police officer.
Authorities initially closed all traffic from the intersection of Thrailkill Road and Mount Zion Boulevard through Mount Zion Boulevard and Wright Circle.
Police confirmed that the roadway has since been reopened to normal traffic.
Officials have not yet detailed how the suspects allegedly impersonated law enforcement officers or what specific items they intended to take from the home.
Police have not released whether the suspects carried any weapons during the break-in or if they knew the homeowner.
