SCHENECTADY — A Schenectady man faces felony charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase across two counties on Thursday.
Danzille Robinson, 34, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence, both felonies, after allegedly trying to destroy a controlled substance he’d been carrying while running away from police.
State Police initially said their pursuit kicked off when troopers tried to stop a vehicle traveling south on Interstate 87 in Malta, just north of Exit 12, for traffic violations around 2:16 p.m.
The driver “failed to comply,” police said.
But on Friday, State Police said that, after further investigation, they found that the driver had been traveling north, did pull over, and was speaking to a trooper outside the vehicle when a passenger, Robinson, allegedly climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away.
Robinson then used a U-turn pull-off and led State Police on a chase south on I-87, State Police said.
He left the interstate at Exit 11 and continued to drive through Saratoga County.
Troopers deployed a tire-deflation device at the intersection of Balltown Road and Union Street in Niskayuna.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop near Central and Covington avenues in Schenectady, more than 20 miles from where the chase began, according to State Police.
Robinson allegedly ran away on foot while trying to destroy substances he was carrying, but was taken into custody, State Police said.
No injuries or damage to uninvolved vehicles were reported.
In addition to the felony charges, Robinson also faces misdemeanor charges of seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a vehicle, second-degree reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration and traffic violations.
He was transported to the State Police barracks in Latham, arraigned in Malta Town Court and transferred to the Saratoga County jail without bail.
The vehicle’s original driver, whom police did not identify, was ticketed and released.
