RENSSELAER — A 67-year-old school bus aide has been charged with sexually molesting a non-verbal autistic girl while he sat next to her on multiple trips to her school.
Felton Edwards Jr. was charged with endangering the welfare of a disabled person, a felony, and public lewdness, a misdemeanor, and arraigned in Rensselaer City Court on Friday.
Judge Linda Johnson ordered him released pending a court appearance scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
Wednesday.
He was ordered to stay away from the victim.
A person with knowledge of the investigation said that a security camera on the bus had captured video footage of Edwards allegedly exposing himself to the teenager and also having her place her hand inside his pants.
There had been at least a dozen incidents of abuse since May — while the school bus security camera was activated — but police weren't notified until July 17, after a bus driver reported Edwards' contact with the girl during an incident on July 16.
It's unclear when the bus driver had first noticed the suspicious activity.
The incident that led to Edwards' arrest took place while the bus was traveling in the city of Rensselaer.
But other incidents are alleged to have occurred when the bus was transporting the student to a school for disabled students in Albany County.
