The U.S. and Iran are on a collision course over the Islamic republic’s nuclear program, with Tehran’s latest announcement that it has begun enriching uranium to 60 percent purity  closer than ever to weapons-grade  raising the stakes in a long-simmering dispute. 
U.S. officials have warned that Iran’s move, which came just hours after the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board of governors censured Iran for its lack of cooperation with nuclear inspectors, could complicate efforts to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. 
“This is a significant escalation,” said a senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. 
“It brings Iran even closer to the threshold of having enough material for a nuclear weapon, and it makes it harder for us to return to the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action).” 
The 2015 deal, which Iran struck with world powers to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, has been in tatters since the Trump administration withdrew the U.S. from it in 2018 and reimposed sanctions. 
Iran has since gradually abandoned the deal’s restrictions, and in recent months has accelerated its uranium enrichment activities, reaching purity levels far beyond the deal’s limits. 
Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but U.S. officials and allies say the advances in enrichment bring Iran closer to being able to develop a nuclear weapon. 
The IAEA has repeatedly stated that Iran’s enrichment activities are inconsistent with its obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
